HISTORIC MOMENTS IN THE DOME’S HISTORY:
Governor Connally tossed out the first ball for the first baseball game ever played indoors in 1965, and President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife Lady Bird were in attendance;
Mickey Mantle had both the first hit (a single) and the first home run in the Astrodome in 1965;
Judy Garland was the first artist to play at the Astrodome, and The Supremes were her opening act in 1965;
the “Dome” was the opening event for the AMA Grand National Championship for 18 years, beginning in 1968;
the “Dome” also hosted an AMA Supercross event from 1974â€“2002;
the “Game of the Century” (basketball) between the University of Houston Cougars and the UCLA Bruins took place at the Astrodome in 1968;
Robert Altman’s 1970 comedy, Brewster McCloud was set at the Astrodome;
Evel Knievel jumped 13 cars two nights in a row at the “Dome” in 1971;
Muhammad Ali fought Cleveland Williams in the Astrodome in 1966;
Elvis Presley gave six performances at the “Dome” between February and March 1970, and performed there again in 1974;
the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match occurred in 1973 at the “Dome”, with Billie Jean King defeating Bobby Riggs;
the Astrodome hosted “The Rolling Thunder Revue Tour”, headed by Bob Dylan, in 1976;
the Astrodome was the setting for the filming of an exhibition game with the fictional Houston Toros in the 1977 movie, The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training;
the Rolling Stones performed at the “Dome” in 1981, 1989 and 1994;
the Jacksons performed at the Astrodome during their “Victory Tour” in 1984;
Pink Floyd performed at the Astrodome during their “A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour” in 1987;
the Astrodome hosted the 1989 NBA All-Star Game;
Metallica and Guns N’ Roses performed at the “Dome” in 1992;
U2 filmed the music video for “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” inside the Astrodome;
the WWE, (then known as the WWF) hosted “WrestleMania X-Seven” in 2001;
And, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina (August 31, 2005), the Harris County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the State of Louisiana came to an agreement to allow at least 25,000 evacuees from New Orleans, especially those that were sheltered in the Louisiana Superdome, to move to the Astrodome until they could return home.
